MissedOpportunity:Meek heads - why can't they be more assertive?
The Head I worked for who allowed pupil atrocities to go on unchecked wasn't in the least meek. He was haughtily arrogant. His blinkers were worn with pride. His idea of 'sorting' a problem was to temporarily exclude, sometimes the same young person time and time again. I believe the LEA paid him a handsome amount over the usual salary to keep a lid on a boiling pot. Staff were made to feel it was THEIR fault that kids behaved as they did. It was a clever smoke screen. Not many stayed long enough to suss out what was going on. In fairness, a good proportion of the school's students would have wreaked havoc in a PRU. There was no where else for them to go...so it was all kept in-house. Turnover of staff was incredible. End of term exodus of staff? No.Teachers left mid-week, some during the course of a day, never to return. So many left at the end of a school year. In September the die-hards - experienced staff who were also getting paid a lot more than the going rate - had to greet a whole new bunch of enthusiastic teachers. Most lost their sparkle and drive by the middle of the first week....and were made to feel THEY were failing. Clever ploy.
