Is it Weebecka or just one on the boring old lot who like to jump up and down shouting "clique!" every time certain posters disagree with someone? I know which I'd guess.

There are ways ti have a deep conversation about pedagogy on TES, but sometimes the opinon forum is not the best place. If you want to have a look through 800,000 posts there are some posts between us comparing teaching in different phases, questioing styles, defining. Independent learning and discussing the value of group work.

Change your name, ask tes to delete all your other posts and start again becka, that would be my advice. good luck for your talk.

I don't think she'd be capable of not posting "with my fantastic skills on forums and education I am such a wonderful example of the human race ; you should all bow down and worship me" sort of stuff.

I'm not even sure she realises she sounds like that.

Sideshow is right and links in to what other people have said about the sense of community here. It's much easier to have a serious educational discussion when you trust the other person - both in terms of their experience and the truthfulness with which they share that experience. When you know people better (sometimes through daft chat) you get a feel for who has that knowledge and integrity and you find "go to" people on different subjects. Equally, such experience and authority can shine through even one post on a topic and that's when you can recognise a true expert.

The sock puppet thing made me look it up .... this is a description of a fake psychic called Earl Curley of whom the original "sock puppet" description (he tried to claim the Randi prize) was made.

    It sounds vaguely familiar.

"Curley had a lot of character flaws that made him a Great Kook. Lots of kooks make outlandish claims -- like inventing the quicksort algorithm, being a rich lawyer, finding a way to seduce women with ease, a willingness to kill if denied tenure -- but few kooks claimed actual supernatural powers.

Curley also claimed a level of intelligence, business acumen, web design skills, sexual prowess, and rhythm on the dance floor that were obviously and patently false based on even the most cursory reading of any one of his posts to Usenet.

Finally, Curley had a perverse and all consuming need for his doubters to actually believe his grandiose claims. Curley was caught in a weird spiral. More he was doubted and jeered at, more outlandish his claims got, greater his need to convince those laughing at him he really was everything he said he was."

Thirded (I said something similar a week or so ago!!!).

After all there may have some little gems worth knowing about and I'm always up for learning something new in this profession.

That reminds me of Mike Corley. Do you think anyone will write a Weebee opera?

"If this young man expresses himself in terms too deep for me, Why, what a very singularly deep young man this deep young man must be!" (Patience, G&S)

Why create an opera when it already exists ?
