I was directed to this thread and to be honest I'm horrified by the bitching. It's been a few years since I've posted on here. Is this a typical thread? Surely this kind of discussion is something the school kids would be proud of?

It is true that there was an open invitation and a link across to maths on opinion and it was certainly a factor that attracted me also.  Unfortunately some of those who have been posting for a  long time become accustomed to crude and unnecessary jibes and attacks that are made on a daily basis. It seems to take fresh eyes , or those who have not been here for a while to see that.  I think some posters like to see themselves as being in the posting vanguard taking as their role models  modern  comedians such as Russel Brand, "Wossy" or even those on QI . They like to be "edgy" but in fact often lose the distinction between close and humorous observation of life and being very offensive and unfunny.

People are generally directed for one a few distinct reasons

    (i) Their e-buddy send them to say how wrong things are

(ii) They are not directed, they are indeed the person who is shunned and try and multiply their opinion by 2

(iii) They are the mods/owner of the board

    or

(iv) The good old TES email links this as a hot topic.

I think you raise a valid point about the level of hostility. The only thing that stops this in the real world is the fear of consequence (generally a loss of job or friends).

    The bottom line:

    • Weebecka started posting strange theories on pedagogy
    • Called herself an expert in more than one aspect
    • Had never really taught more than a couple of terms anywhere
    • Her CV and account of her experience could have been a golf course, it had more holes than St Andrews and Wentworth put together.
    • Was called out
    • Became patornising and rude
    • 'evolved' into a troll racking 1200 posts of pure garbage in 3-4 months, many punctuated with unrelated links and references. They usually had peoples name with a 'spin' on them
    • she left
    • probably trotted back to her padded cell with a laura ashley sofa and over sized wine glass darling

This is life and there are some great resources and threads here for people to share and learn. So if you have been directed, then let's share some ideas and I for one love to talk shop (even if I do seem forceful) as thats what we are here for.

Clowns exist everywhere in life and sometimedon't respond to subtle techniques..shame.

So, hit the 'start thread button' and we can get on with maths and learning.

Being banned is interesting you know.

It gives you a chance to do other things.

Oh dear I have a horrible sinking feeling about this thread..... (and my surprising current un-banned-ness.....).

I see things very differently from the way they are portrayed in the blog that this link leads to.

weebecka - you have mentioned that the way people reacted to you on the TES was different from the way users of the NCETM and/or ATM messageboards behave.  This is true.  Unfortunately there is another difference.  Here on TES, for whatever reason (perhaps because pseudonyms are common?), people have responded to you in a robust way.  I know a number of people who have posted on NCETM and/or ATM but who stopped doing so because of the way you responded to their posts.

If you look back on page three of this thread you will find brookes said some similar things to this.  As far as I am aware, I don't know brookes, yet she stopped visiting NCETM for the same reason.  This seems to me to provide some triangulation.

Earlier in this thread I said that I did not want anyone to leave the forum.  I meant that.  It is unfortunate that you have driven people away from NCETM and ATM, though.

I have tried very hard not to get involved in the bickering, but the following posts from earlier in this thread are utterly bizarre:

    bombaysapphire:
    weebecka:
    Morning bombayloaf.

Either don't use my name or get it right.

    weebecka:
I do understand that this forum has been a vital place for the career progression of many meatsapphire,

What is the point in that?  Someone has asked for their username to be used accurately, so in your response you deliberately don't do that?  This is incredibly reminiscent of the Yr 7 girls who used to tease other members of the class and would then declare very loudly she was being bullied as they responded to her.

Final thing for this post: I like Tom Lehrer.  I don't particularly see the relevance of "I got it from Agnes" to this forum, though.  This is a genuine question: why are you so keen for everyone to see/hear that?

For anyone looking for the blog, the key elements are temporarily down.

Anyway in the meantime here's something from my walk this morning.

There is so much here that you do not see

A red squirrel darted along the bank of the stream

he stopped with an inquisitive air and caught my daughter's eye

her smile spanned generations about the earth and below.

He peered out from behind a wide oak

    confident in his freedom

before he disappeared in to the damp morning mist

which rose from the mossy grass of the graveyard.

A stranger would enjoy this scene

might decide to stop a while and plant some flowers in the grass

They would not know of the carpet of snowdrops soon to come

the blanket of crocuses which will follow

    the daffodils and the bluebells.

    Here's something older

    Hi everyone.

Just a short note in defence of the site of the National Council for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics which, while I acknowledge is not being attacked, I feel could indirectly lose lustre by association with this issue. If this reads like an overreaction then consider it a plug.

The organisation itself has good aims. The site is more than its fora and is stacked with good information. The fora themselves are populated with good people whose experiences on the current issue converge remarkably with those of the TES fora members, and if you were to examine the discussions in the Maths Café over the last few months - there aren’t that many, possibly because of the current issue - you’ll see that the members there aren’t exactly supine on this issue. The administrators of the NCETM site are not unaware of this issue, and have taken action to limit some of its more grubby and bizarre effects upon visitors to their site, for example with regard to a recent blog post casting the TES maths forum regulars in a less than flattering light.

I do not speak for the NCETM or its community anymore than the person behind this issue is, as claimed, a “facilitator” there but as one of many here who enjoy both NCETM and TES, I would like to say explicitly to casual TES readers and regulars alike that this issue is not representative of the material and people to be found at the NCETM. Pop in sometime, if you wish.

In reply to a particular post of DM‘s:

    DM:

I'm not going.   I'm sure I have heard her full repertoire already.

    It goes:

    • I laid the cables so that they could have broadband in Jordan
    • Nothing beats breastfeeding
    • I sometimes struggle to comprehend my own brilliance
    • I don't like Ofsted inspectors very much (particularly when they are grading my lessons)
    • I crochet along to Flatland the Movie
    • I remained inspirational while suffering outrageous bullying at the TES
    • Here's a youtube clip that was randomly selected by a monkey
    • I wrote the facilitation rulebook
    • Mymaths is good for that
    • Did I tell you that I am adored internationally?
    • I might need a new husband soon

Even as I quote the above I must avoid reading it or I’ll explode into laugh-shaped shrapnel. I only just finished sweeping up after the first reading on Sunday.

    DM:

  • I laid the cables so that they could have broadband in Jordan
  • I just worked in Jordan on the introduction of stand along computers and on contemplating what was possible in the future with broadband technology.  We reckoned it would be far far cheaper to supply braodband to Jordan than to Cumbria!  I did not personally lay the cables.

    DM:

  • Nothing beats breastfeeding
  • You're getting confused DM, it was Sabbir who kept going on about his nipples, not me.

    DM:

  • I sometimes struggle to comprehend my own brilliance
  • Indifferent

    DM:

  • I don't like Ofsted inspectors very much (particularly when they are grading my lessons)
  • I like inspectors, especially when they've had a few beers.  I think the current inspection system is seriously flawed.

    DM:

  • I crochet along to Flatland the Movie
  • That's true

    DM:

  • I
  • tried to be

  • Here's (another) one for today http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abg-RtFn90s&feature=related

    DM:

  • I wrote the facilitation rulebook
  • I am writing a discussion forum facilitation guidbook

    DM:

  • Mymaths is good for that
  • Yes

    DM:

  • Did I tell you that I am adored internationally?
  • Hmm

    DM:

  • I might need a new husband soon
  • Well you never know.  New husbands are fun.
